AB de Villiers Facts

AB was born into a sports-loving family, who always encouraged him to play sports.

- AB Often regarded as one of the best batsmen of his generation and also regarded as one of the greatest of all time.

- Noted as one of the most innovative batsmen in the modern game, De Villiers is noted for many unorthodox shots behind the wicket-keeper and slips, which earned him the nickname Mr. 360.

He has scored the fastest 50, 100 and 150 in ODI cricket, fastest Test century by a South African and fastest T20I fifty by a South African.

In the 2011 Cricket World Cup, he achieved the distinction of being the first South African player to score two ODI centuries in a single World Cup tournament. He scored centuries in consecutive matches against West Indies and the Netherlands.

- In January 2015, AB became the first player to hit an ODI century in 31 balls as he clobbered West Indies bowling attack for 149 runs off 44 balls. In the same match, he also became the first player to hit 50 in 16 balls.

- He couldn’t stop his tears from coming out and cried on the field when South Africa lost in the nail-biting World Cup 2015 semi-final match against New Zealand.

- Apart from sports and studies, the accomplished sportsman had made a striking impact in the music industry too. He released a 14-song album back in 2010, which features both Afrikaans and English language tracks.
His album ‘Maak Jou Drome Waar’ (Make Your Dream Come True) that was released with Ampie du Preez had topped the national music charts.

- De Villiers proposed to his girlfriend, Danielle Swart, at the Taj Mahal in 2012, after 5 years of dating. The couple got married in March 2013, in Bela-Bela, South Africa.

- In September 2016, he released his autobiography “AB: The Autobiography” in English and Afrikaans.

- He supports ‘Make a Difference Foundation’ that supports selected scholars from different fields in South Africa.

- He has his official app which can be found at ab17.fanhero.com

- On 23 May 2018, he announced that he was retiring from all forms of international cricket, fans all over the world stunned after announcing his decision to retire from international cricket, via a video message.
